If you ask Apple, “Why Apple Watch?” they’ll tell you that “It’s the ultimate device for a healthy life.”
Maybe. Maybe not. But people are buying them as the watches Apple made are some of the best-selling smartwatches.
Since the debut of the first-generation Watch in 2015, Apple has made clever and much-needed improvements that have led us to the Apple Watch Ultra. Eight years ago smartwatches weren’t as popular as they are today. Apple even had to warrant the existence of a product that only works with an iPhone (Apple Watch doesn’t work with iPads and Macs).
Fast forward to 2023, the features found in Apple Watches have made it the most popular smartwatches available on the market. Whether users want a device that handles all their notifications, keeps their health in check, or reduces reliance on the iPhone, the Apple Watch is the jack of all trades.
The 18-karat Apple Watch showed that Apple placed its smartwatch in the ‘beautiful accessory’ section for your iPhone, but over the years, it has now become a necessity. People were saved from cardiac arrests as their Watches warned them in time, which is a testament that Apple has now positioned it as a health device.
If you are looking to own an Apple Watch or are just curious as to how it has evolved, here’s a list of all Apple Watches that have been released since its inception.
List of all Apple Watches
There are a total of 12 Watches that Apple made since 2015 and you’ll look at each of their technical specifications. Before we get to those, the next segment decodes the features that make the Apple Watch the best-selling smartwatch in the world.
What features warrant the existence of the Apple Watch?
Users buy the Apple Watch for its abundant features that lessen the need to pull your iPhone out of your pocket. The Watch can – show notifications, answer calls, activate Siri, set timers & alarms, do workouts, reply to emails and texts, and much more.
Following are the features people buy the Apple Watch for. You’ll be amazed at how much it can get done!
Staying active: “Move. Exercise. Stand.” as Apple states. You can track all your activities – walking, running, yoga, strength training, HIIT Pilates, and more. Apple Fitness+ makes fitness available for all.
Stay in touch with your loved ones: Make calls, and reply to texts, with Wi-Fi Watches or cellular. These things can be done without your iPhone.
Track your Sleep: If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, it can track your sleep. You can also create a bedtime schedule.
Track your heart: The Apple Watch will inform you if you have unusually high or low heart rates and irregular heart rhythms. The Heart Rate app will give notifications to alert you about these irregularities. You can also take an electrocardiogram (ECG) if you have an Apple Watch that supports it.
Emergency services: Features like Crash Detection on the Apple Watch Series 8 and later can detect if you’re in a severe car crash. It will automatically connect you with emergency services.
Track your wellness: With the Apple Watch, you’ll never forget to take your medications, wash your hands for 20 seconds, and protect your hearing once you cross a certain decibel.
Stay on top of your Mental health: Apple Watch helps you train your mind. Use the Breathe feature to focus and walk away from irritating situations. The Reflect feature lets you reflect on your life to help you focus.
Water sports: The Apple Watch is water resistant, which makes it a great device for surfing, swimming, or diving (Ultra only!)
Temperature sensing: With the Apple Watch Series 8, you can better understand your cycle. It tracks your temperature while you sleep and Cycle tracking uses this data to provide an estimate of when you ovulated – a helpful feature for family planning.
Ask the voice assistant Siri anything and it will do it for you: Call a contact, find directions, play a playlist, text someone, know what song is playing, and more.
Money manager: You can store your debit, credit, and other prepaid cards in the Wallet app, which can be used on Apple Pay to buy almost anything in an instant. You can also receive money through the Messages app with this feature.
Stream music: You can download songs on Apple Music and listen to them by connecting your AirPods to your Apple Watch.

9. Apple Watch Series 7
Sizes available: 41mm, 45mm
Apple Watch Series 7 was the first-ever smartwatch I owned and the experience was amazing! The curved display which was 20 percent bigger than the Series 6 was a joy to use, especially for typing with the new Swipe typing feature.
Apple trimmed the bezels a little and the rounded corners made more room for watch faces and interphases. The Series 7 introduced fast-charging support and charges the watch faster 33% faster with the included cable. Unfortunately, the Series 7 did not introduce any major features or new sensors – it has all the same sensors as the Series 6.

10. Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
Sizes available: 40 mm, 44 mm
Apple launched the second-generation Apple Watch SE in 2022 and it looks similar to the 2020 Watch SE. They look the same and have almost the same features, but the main differences with the new 2022 Watch SE are a newer processor, new colors, and a lowered price. The SE 2022 is available starting at $249.
The 2nd generation SE still lacks the always-on display and many health sensors such as ECG, Blood Oxygen, sleep tracking, and cycle tracking. It’s currently the best Apple Watch to buy on a budget.

12. Apple Watch Ultra

It was rumored for a long time that Apple might be working on a rugged Apple Watch with double the battery life and extra features. It turned out to be true on September 7, 2022, as Apple unveiled the most rugged Apple Watch ever.
Marketed towards endurance athletes, outdoor adventurers, and ocean explorers, the Watch Ultra is the best Apple Watch money can buy. Apart from a revamped look – a new 49 mm flat display that goes is 2,000 nits bright, an 86-decibel speaker, an extra button called the Action Button, and 36 hours of battery life – the Watch Ultra costs $799 and comes with an exclusive app to calculate water depth.
I was tempted to buy this watch since it was unveiled, but I am not a fitness freak and the only exercise I currently get is walking my lovely dog. Nevertheless, I bought the Green Alpine Lopp variant and sold my Series 7. So far, I am impressed by its capabilities. If you aren’t an athlete and still want the Watch Ultra, go for it, but look for some deals.

Apart from the 3,000 nits bright display, the all-new S9 processor, the double-tap feature, and some new bands, there’s nothing new in the Ultra 2. It even costs $799.

They differ in materials, features, and pricing.
Can I use the Apple Watch without an iPhone?

Is the Apple Watch 7 discontinued?

How long does Apple Watches last after a charge?

Which series Watch is the best in Apple?
If you are on a budget and the exclusion of ECG doesn’t bother you, go for the SE 2022. If you want all the features by spending a few dollars more, go for the series 8 (or even 7). If you want the best that Apple has to offer, without a doubt buy the Apple Watch Ultra. All the watches share a rotating stable of features.
What’s better Apple Watch or Fitbit?
